Notes from a Homeschool Mom

While some homeschoolers follow a year-round schedule with shorter, more frequent breaks, many others treat late summer or early fall as a traditional “back to school” season.

Living in Arizona, I homeschooled straight through the hot summer months and instead took time off around the fall and winter holidays.

That kind of flexibility is one of the greatest advantages of homeschooling—you can shape the calendar to fit your family’s climate, energy, and needs.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING OR COUNTERFEIT GOSPEL?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is promoted as teaching emotional skills, but it often functions as ideological indoctrination that undermines parental authority and biblical values. SEL is not limited to K–12 classrooms—it has spread into colleges, workforce training, corporate programs, and other institutions.

The Dangers of Community Schools

Simple Homeschool Activites!
Looking for light, engaging ways to ease into the new season? These simple activities combine learning with the last days of summer fun and require almost no prep:

1. End-of-Summer Nature Seed Hunt – Collect seeds from flowers, weeds, or garden plants. Sort, label, and start a seed envelope collection or plant a few for fall observation. (Science + fine motor + nature study)
2. Back-to-Homeschool Vision Board or Goals Day – Kids draw/write goals, favorite subjects, or dreams for the year. Add photos, stickers, or a “first day” sign. (Writing, planning, motivation)
3. Kitchen Science Treat – Make root beer floats or ice cream in a bag to explore states of matter while celebrating the last hot days of summer. (See recipe directly below for Ice Cream in a Bag.) Enjoy!

ENCORE: ICE CREAM IN A BAG
(This is such a treat, we had to repeat from our July PSE Newsletter)

A delightful hands-on science activity to enjoy God’s creation (states of matter, freezing point depression) while making a sweet treat together as a family. Discuss His provision and the blessings of freedom!
Materials (per person/small group):
1 small zip-top bag (sandwich size)
1 large zip-top bag (gallon size)
½–1 cup half-and-half, milk, or heavy cream
1–2 tablespoons sugar
¼–1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3–4 cups ice
¼–½ cup rock salt or kosher/coarse salt
Dish towel or gloves (optional, for cold hands)
Steps:
Place milk/cream, sugar, and vanilla in the small bag. Seal tightly, removing excess air.
Place the small bag inside the large bag.
Fill the large bag with ice and add the salt. Seal tightly.
Wrap in a dish towel if needed. Shake, knead, and toss the bag vigorously for 5–10 minutes (or until ice cream forms).
Remove the small bag, wipe off salt water, and enjoy your homemade ice cream!
